How Delivery Hero uses GitHub

Delivery Hero built a central home for community, communication, and code on GitHub Enterprise.

Company Overview

Location: Berlin, Germany

Company Size: 21,000+ employees, operating in 41 countries

Number of Developers: 2,000+

Industry: Online Food Ordering

One of the leading food-delivery platforms in the world, Delivery Hero processes over 2,000,000 orders to more than 310,000 restaurant partners every day across its 26 brands in 41 countries. The company's tech backbone connects customers, restaurants, and drivers in real time across billing, marketing, customer care, and restaurant operations.

Coordinating Global Teams

With teams located around the world, Delivery Hero uses GitHub Enterprise Cloud as a central tool for collaboration. Each market presents unique challenges—from Saudi Arabia's different address systems to cultural considerations like Singapore's halal and non-halal food transport requirements. While local teams operate mostly autonomously, they need to work in tandem to offer customers a smooth experience.

Max Williams, Principal Systems Engineer at Delivery Hero, explains: "Using GitHub Enterprise means we don't have to manage, monitor, run, or scale anything. Our code is always on the cloud, without complications."

This cross-functional visibility encourages collaboration across time zones and locations. Developers can click a link to a pull request and provide insight into what's going on, and teammates stay on top of notifications in real time thanks to GitHub's Slack integration.

Automation and Efficiency

Delivery Hero relies on automation to free up developers for more challenging work. By using GitHub with Travis CI, the team compiles documentation from repositories and publishes it automatically to their website. "This process of committing, merging, and automatically reloading documentation allows us to have it live really quickly," Williams said.

The company also uses Atlantis, a third-party automation tool that leverages the GitHub API to hook into pull requests. It scans code and, if it meets criteria, runs analyses and posts results back to GitHub via API comments. This ensures everyone working on a codebase—from Europe to Latin America—follows the same shared processes.

Security and Open Source

With a sprawling global network, security is mandatory. Delivery Hero uses Dependabot, automated fixes built into GitHub Enterprise, which monitors a project's dependencies for security vulnerabilities and automatically opens pull requests to update them. "It helps us write more secure code," Williams said.

The team also leverages open source to set up infrastructure and develop tools within their codebase. "If you're a modern tech company, using open source is the default," Williams noted. Open source software is more efficient and faster than other enterprise alternatives, and it allows the team to lean on the community for help and inspiration.

Looking Ahead

As Delivery Hero continues to grow globally, Williams is excited about GitHub innovations like GitHub Actions to streamline workflows and eliminate the need for third-party tools. He considers GitHub Enterprise so essential that he reviews new candidates' GitHub profiles during hiring—expecting that they've used GitHub in their past work.

"For me," he said, "working without GitHub Enterprise is like using computers without screens. It's just that essential to everyday work."
